Part 1
Reflection
My first piece of writing was about the scarlet letter. I wrote about the changing personalities of Pearl and Dimmesdale. Mrs. Turner wrote on my paper telling me to prove just how Pearl expresses her love for Dimmesdale. I took her advice and changed it to prove how Pearl expressed her love for Dimmesdale. While we were reading the book, we learned about dark romanticism. The dark romanticism idea was during Hawthorne's time. The idea was that life was colorful, capricious and contradictory to dark Romans. We learned about thesis statement, which is a intrest-catching sentence. I have learned about brushstrokes and how they improve my paper. I also learned about transitions and how to change from one paragraph to another.
My second piece of writing was about nature. We went on a nature walk and shared something that represented transcendentalism. I wrote about the ways to view nature and how i saw nature. I learned about the views of transcendentalism. Transcendentalism is a view that everything in the world, including human beings, is a reflection of the Divine Soul. Also the physical facts of the natural world are a doorway to the spiritual or ideal world. Two people who believe in the transcendentalism view were Emerson and Thoreau. They were both writers. This has to be my favorite writing out of the ones that I wrote.
Part 2
Both of my pieces needed revision. In my scarlet letter essay, i needed to prove better that Pearl loved Dimmesdale. I revised by saying "She ran to him, fell upon him, and began to sob onto her father because she realized that he loved her and that she could truely love him too." In my nature essay i needed a thesis statement. I wrote, "Transcendentalism is a beautiful view." Also on my nature essay i revised the part with shady and changed it to Shady. When i was talking about my story i took out the part that said,"and i will type it out." I made these revisions because i felt that they were nessasary to put in.
Part 3
From Meredith Alewine's blog, I learned that you need to be more descriptive in your writing (http://meredith92.blogspot.com/). She starts her nature essay by saying, "I've never expected that a peaceful walk through the woods to turn into me cringing in pain because I just stepped in a briar patch roughly the size of my head." I like her use of comparison from the briar patch to her head. It is amussing and makes you want to continue reading. I know that if i add more description people will want to continue reading like i wanted to on Merediths'. In Brooke Oxendine's blog, I read her first sentence and was amazed with the intellegence of her words(http://brookeworks.blogspot.com/). I learned that bigger words can bring out your writing to make it more attractive. Savanna's blog also has a very descriptive essay(http://savannakeown.blogspot.com/). The first sentence is, "I slid on my white karate uniform, clean and crisp, while my heart pounded." This sentence has so many details that gives you the image of her feelings.

Scarlet Letter Essay
The Scarlet Letter Essay
Throughout the story of The Scarlet Letter Pearl and Dimmesdale changed personalities. With the personalities changing throughout, the story gives more perspectives about the characters. I found many perspectives and ways to look at wording throughout the story.
Pearl is a very intriguing child. She sees objects through a different light. In the story she remembers her mother as the lady with the letter 'A' on her bosom. A quote that Hawthorne uses in the book shows that the letter on her bosom is how she remembers Hester. "But that first object of which Pearl seemed to become aware was-shall we say it?-the scarlet letter on Hester's bosom!" Pearl also remembers Dimmesdale as the minister who has his hand over his heart all the time. She remembers two important people through symbols of who they are. The perspective that I gained from these symbols is that Pearl only remembers people for their true character. At the end of the story, Pearl kisses Dimmesdale on the lips and he soon dies. I interpreted this as the "kiss of death". "Pearl kissed his lips. A spell was broken. The great scene of grief, in which the wild infant bore a part, had developed all her sympathies; and as her tears fell upon her father's cheek, they were the pledge that she would grow up amid human joy and sorrow, nor forever do battle with the world, but be a woman in it." This quote proves that in the end Pearl loved Dimmesdale. She ran to him, fell upon him, and began to sob onto her father because she realized that he loved her and that she could truely love him too. How does this prove that Pearl loves Dimmesdale? -Kristinaturner 10/5/07 5:18 AM
Dimmesdales personality doesn't change so much as other characters throughout the story as it does at the end. At the beginning he was deathly sick. Soon after we found out he was sick because of his sin. Dimmesdale turns to Chillingworth for medicine and health through his tough sickness. Soon after Dimmesdale leaves Chillingworths side he dies. Dimmesdale wont acknowledge Hester and Pearl. Before he dies though he does acknowledge them and tells them to come upon the scaffold and tells the town that he is Pearls father. He also shows everyone his carving that he did to himself because that was his punishment to himself. Chillingworth told Dimmesdale that the only place he could escape him was in heaven. So the day before the ship left, Dimmesdale dies and escapes Chillingworth and enters heaven. "Old Roger Chillingworth knelt down beside him, with a blank, dull countenance, out of which the life seemed to have departed." At this point Chillingworth realizes that Dimmesdale is escaping him and yells at him saying, "Thou hast escaped me!" he repeated more than once. "Thou hast escaped me!" Chillingworth knows that Dimmesdale is dying and now he wont be able to torture him anymore with his medicines.
Once one realizes that the personalities of characters change, hopefully they will try and see into their perspectives. If they don't see the perspectives, then one will miss the hidden messages that I feel that I found. Hawthornes importance of the changing personalities gives the characters realistic emotions.

Nature Essay
Nature Essay
Nature is the greatest beauty. It can be seen many different ways and found in the strangest places. There is nothing prettier or greater than nature. Emerson and Thoreau were transcendentalist, so they found beauty in there surroundings. I have found nature in many different ways and places. Nature can be found in the forests, trees, backyards, beaches, long roads, storms, and even songs. I have found nature in all of the places i listed.
We went on the nature walk through the Hanna forest and i found comfort. Even though some of the students were talking, I was able to block it out and focus on the beauty between the tall trees. I felt the light breeze flowing through the trees. The scent of the dead leaves and the live ones too. The rays of sunlight coming through the trees left beautiful designs on the forest ground. I saw lives that were on going underneath the leaves. There was just a great peacefulness running all around me in that forest.
In my front yard there is this big, old tree. My neighbors and I call the tree shady. The name fits perfectly, because it is so cool and shady under there. I love to just go under it and look up at the branches and the beautiful green leaves. In my backyard there are many plants. My father loves to garden, so he spends a lot of his time working out in the yard making it look beautiful. So there is either the front yard or the backyard to go to and find peace in nature.
Whenever I go down to the beach, I tend to go down to the beach and listen to the waves roll in. Its especially gorgeous when the sun is setting or rising. You can sit on the beach and feel the sand between your toes. You can watch the dolphins come through the invisible barrier of water and skim the surface. You can walk along the beach and pick up shells that are interesting and different or just pretty.
Believe it or not you can even find beauty in tar. Going down the long roads that just seem to have no end is the prettiest thing to me. With trees on the side or even fields and that endless road that seems to be the only reason that keeps you going down that road. You never know whats at the end and curiosity drives you to find out.
I wrote a paper in 5th grade that resembles the transcendentalism view greatly. My subject was on a storm and it won an award. My story was called The Storm and I will type it out. "I was watching a storm from my window one day. I saw a beautiful spark in the dark sky. Then I heard a loud booming in the sky, it seemed close and it was. I was frightened by the storm, but i stayed where i was. Another noise began. I looked and saw tiny, little, silver droplets appear. Then I heard some whirling air. The flashing lights suddenly went away, then the booming. Next, the tiny droplets went away, and so did the whirling air. Suddenly, a big, bright, yellow circle appeared. Next to it was an arch of beautiful colors. That was the best day ever." My story shows the beauty in a storm and what natural nature does.
Many country singers write about beauty and the trust in God. Transcendentalism believe that everything is a reflection of the Divine Soul. In most of their songs you can find them talking about their view on the world and environment.
If people would just go out into the world and take a look around, the would see just how beautiful it is. Most people believe that they are just too busy and dont have time to do things like that. One minute would be all that you would need to breathe in the beauty of nature.
